Switching in would be impossible for Alakazam, but Gengar's 3 immunities Normal, Fighting and Ground give it a small window to switch in on. Gengar's only ability is Levitate, which is very useful to a Sub-Poison type Pokemon. Gengar's only problem is that it is its only ability, which makes it weak spots very predictable.

Alakazam has a more broad ability pool. It's 2 natural abilities, Synchronize and Inner Focus, are both rather useless for it. Giving Alakazam a status is rather pointless because it's so fragile and any move that can cause flinching is probably going to kill it anyway. The real magic is in Magic Guard. However, I took HA Alakazam to my first regionals in I love giving it a Life Orb boost with no recoil and the ability to ignore weather damage. HP Ice was actually worth it against Lando and Chomp back then. Zam has better Speed and SpA, and now has access to expanding force. It's more a one trick pokemon, but it's great at what it does.

There's just more you can do with Gengar. Right now though, Alakazam seems better and that's almost entirely due to Expanding Force. There's only one purpose of putting them into gyms: showing off. Still usefull with only psycho cut? I was skeptical too about Alakazam, but after getting a psycho cut psychic one and using him I have to say, if you can dodge well he is a really fantastic attacker. What do you use him against?
